ITALIC Olympia SM7

SOLD // $385 (plus shipping if outside of the Detroit area)

Meet “Naomi,” a working Olympia SM3 typewriter with a gorgeous, rare italic typeface. This 1962 portable began life as a Wisconsin public librarian’s private machine.

Made in Germany, this Olympia portable typewriter is a calming white, with a ribbed gray accent and shiny chrome. It is as pleasurable to type on as it was way back when, with keys that all strike fluidly, a smooth carriage, and a cheerful little bell that rings at the end of each line.

More legible than cursive, more personal than a standard typewriter font, this vintage typewriter’s amazing italic typeface/font is pica, which is a comfortable 10 characters per inch. Please see the photos for a type sample. It features a brand new ribbon that is ready to use as soon as you receive it.

Olympias are known as precision-built machines meant to be workhorses for decades and this specific manual typewriter fits that bill to a T, still featuring a smooth typing experience even after all these years. Cosmetically, this quite rare 65-year-old gem is also in remarkably beautiful shape, with only a small blemish in the paint below the carriage return arm (see photo).

This luxurious manual machine measures about 12 x 12 x 5 inches, and includes touch control right on the keyboard, so you can adjust the strike-force needed to type to suit your own preference. As you may know, the “DeLuxe” versions of Olympias are more feature-rich than their standard siblings.

The silver “Olympia” nameplate on the front is complete and shines brightly. It goes without saying that the swooping lines of the machine evoke major space age vibes that will enliven any desk.

“Naomi” arrives in its original, two-toned, felt-lined wooden travel case, which is in very good shape, and which protects the manual typewriter inside well. The case’s interior features clamps and prongs that hold the machine securely in transit.

With a combination of mid-century style and craftsmanship, it’s little wonder that SM7s have been a favorite of writers across genres, including James Baldwin and Kurt Vonnegut, to name just two.
Please look through the pictures to see more detail of the visual condition of this typewriter. Don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions.

This stunning Olympia SM7 Deluxe is ready for its next adventure inspiring you to write out yours.
